Lyons Tales: A Review and Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Sept. 9th

FRIENDS OF ATHLETICS GOLF TOURNAMENT

Thank you to all who attended the 2012 Mount Holyoke College Friends of Athletics Golf Tournament on Monday at The Orchards.  It was a beautiful day and an equally fun event for all the participants, MHC staff and student-athletes. A huge thank you to all our sponsors for making the fifteenth annual event such a success. We look forward to next year!

SOCCER

Mount Holyoke shouldered a pair of losses last week, falling to Elms College (3-2) and Colby-Sawyer College (4-0).  The Lyons get right back into action with two games this week, including the NEWMAC opener. MHC travels to Amherst College on Wednesday for a 7pm match before heading to Smith College on Saturday for the conference opener at 1pm.

A live webcast for Wednesday’s game against the Lord Jeffs can be seen at https://www.amherst.edu/athletics/jeffcast/jeffcast5, while live stats for Saturday’s game against the Pioneers can be followed at http://www.sidearmstats.com/smith/wsoc/scoreboard.aspx.

FIELD HOCKEY

The Lyons defeated Nichols College, 2-1 last week behind goals from first year Anna Hartman (Montpelier, Vt.) and senior captain Stephanie Pascual (Lawrence, Mass.), but fell in the week’s finale against Castleton State College, 7-2. Mount Holyoke returns to action on Tuesday evening when it travels to Amherst College for a 7pm game.  The Lyons then kick-off their NEWMAC schedule at home on Saturday, welcoming Smith College to the MHC Turf Field at 1pm.

Tuesday’s game can be seen via webcast at https://www.amherst.edu/athletics/jeffcast/jeffcast2. Live stats will be available for Saturday’s home game at http://www.mtholyoke.edu/athletics/livestats/xlive.htm.

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke suffered a 5-4 loss in their only match last week against Simmons. The Lyons got a solid effort from first year Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J.), who not only won at sixth singles, but also won at third doubles with partern My-Linh Nguyen (Potomac, Md.). MHC returns to the court on Saturday when it opens its NEWMAC schedule against Wheaton College at the Mount Holyoke College Tennis Courts.  Match time is set for 1pm.

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons opened their 2012 season with a 1-1 record last week, defeating the University of St. Joseph by a 3-2 margin, before falling to Amherst College, 3-0. Mount Holyoke was paced by first year Emma Sweeting (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.), who recorded a team-high 27 kills with 17 digs over the two matches.

Mount Holyoke returns to the court on Tuesday to open the 2012 NEWMAC schedule against Wellesley College at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium. Match time is set for 7pm. The Lyons then head to conference-rival Clark University on Saturday for a 1pm contest.

CROSS COUNTRY

Led by a seventh-place finish from first year Elizabeth DeLeon (Boise, Idaho), the Lyons cross country team placed fourth of 14 teams at the season-opening Pioneers Invitational at Smith College. DeLeon, who finished in a time of 20:32.45, was one of 152 runners in the 5k event. Mount Holyoke returns to the course on Saturday when it competes at the UMASS-Dartmouth Invitational. Race time is at 12pm.

GOLF

The Lyons golf team hits the links for the first time in 2012 this weekend when they participate at the NYU Invitational. Action begins at 11am on both Saturday and Sunday. Led by third-year head coach Tim Walko, Mount Holyoke returns five players from last year’s squad, including sophomore Madi Mendiola (San Diego, Calif.), who racked up five top ten finishes and posted the second best scoring average in school history (81.27) in 2011-12. She ended the season ranked 12th in the region.
