Crew Competes in Head of the Charles
BOSTON, Mass. (Oct. 20, 2008) - The Mount Holyoke College crew team participated in the 44th annual Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Massachusetts over the weekend. A total of 57 races took place on the Charles River on Saturday and Sunday. The Lyons competed in the Club Fours and the Collegiate Eights Divisions.
Mount Holyoke got things going with a 21st place finish (20:32.932) in the Club Fours Division on Saturday. The Riverside Boat Club took home top honors in the race (18:35.004), which featured a mix of collegiate and club teams. In the boat for the Lyons were coxswain Mya Steadman, Ellen Shaw, Elizabeth Hardt, Ari Baum-Hommes and Abbey Wells. Thirty-nine squads competed in the race.
On Sunday, Mount Holyoke's varsity eight boat participated in the Collegiate Eights Division. Facing off against 34 teams from around the country, the Lyons posted an 18th place result (18:37.344). Among the 21 Division III teams in the field, they finished 11th. Led by coxswain Elizabeth Bernal, Mount Holyoke battled difficult conditions and avoided collision. Bernal was joined in the boat by Sarah Gray, Cleo Schneider, Elissa Center, Kirstie Young, Emily Carol, Elizabeth Brown, Katie Ouellette and Mary Beth Lee. Williams College nabbed first place (17:11.649) overall.
Mount Holyoke will round out its fall slate at the Seven Sisters Championship next weekend. The event is slated to begin on Saturday and conclude on Sunday. Bryn Mawr College will serve as the host of the competition, which will take place on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Lyons took home the crown in 2005. They will enter as reigning champions, as the event was cancelled due to weather in both 2006 and 2007.
