Hot-shooting Chargers pull away from Lyons in second quarter en route to victory

NEW LONDON, N.H. -- Colby-Sawyer College outscored the Mount Holyoke basketball team 21-5 in the second quarter to fuel a 75-48 non-conference victory over the Lyons on Wednesday afternoon.

Mount Holyoke (2-10) was tied 18-18 with Colby-Sawyer (5-8) after one quarter, but the host Chargers exploded for five 3-pointers on seven attempts in the second period, while holding the Lyons to 1-13 shooting from the field, as they pulled away for a 39-23 halftime advantage. Four different Chargers made threes in the decisive period, including two by Tanner Drury.

Colby-Sawyer outscored Mount Holyoke 18-11 in the third period and 18-14 in the fourth period, taking a game-high 27-point lead on its final basket.

The Chargers shot 11-22 from three in the game.

First-year guard Erica Yokota (Tokyo, Japan) shared the Lyons' team lead in scoring with a season-high 11 points, including 3-5 shooting from deep. First-year Justine Dessureault (Trois-Rivieres, Quebec) also scored 11 points from off the bench, shooting 4-5 from the field and grabbing seven rebounds, and senior Taryn White (Alexandria, Va.) tallied 11 points with nine rebounds. Junior Sofia Francisco (Boston, Mass.) had five points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Taylor Fellows led Colby-Sawyer with 16 points, and three Chargers also scored 11 points in Drury, Elyza Mitchell, and Lauren MacDonald.

Mount Holyoke dips to 7-3 all-time against Colby-Sawyer; the Lyons defeated the Chargers 66-59 at home last season.

The Lyons will host Holyoke Community College (7-4) for the first time in the regular season on Saturday at 1pm.
