Basketball plays tough at Babson in closest game since 2015

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Babson College pulled away from a seven-point game midway through the third quarter to defeat the Mount Holyoke College basketball team 79-50 in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon in Staake Gymnasium.

Babson (12-7, 4-1 NEWMAC) won its third straight game and its 26th in a row against Mount Holyoke (4-15, 0-5 NEWMAC). Yet the Lyons continued to show marked improvement as a program, with Saturday's game being their closest result against the Beavers since the 2014-15 season. In the intervening 12 games between the teams, Babson won by an average of 66.7 points per contest.

Babson led wire to wire, including a 13-2 run to begin the game that turned into a 23-10 lead with 1:08 to go in the period.

The host Beavers saw the visiting Lyons outscore them 16-14 in the second quarter, with an 8-0 run to end the half that included 3-pointers by junior Sofia Francisco (Boston, Mass.) and sophomore Ania McMichael (Glastonbury, Conn.).

The Lyons cut a 17-point deficit down to seven points (41-34) with junior Hannah Goen's (New London, N.H.) layup with 4:59 left in the third quarter.

Babson responded with a three-point play by Alyssa Hopps, and the Beavers caught fire from there, scoring 38 points over the final 15 minutes of the game, including 26 in the fourth quarter.

Emily Flynn scored 18 points with 13 rebounds, three assists and two blocks to lead Babson. Chloe Perreault scored 14 points with nine rebounds and five assists, while Julia St. Laurent and Molly Donovan scored 12 points apiece.

Goen led the Lyons with a season-high-tying 15 points, to go with three steals. McMichael scored seven points with three assists and three steals, and senior Taryn White (Alexandria, Va.) added six points and 10 rebounds.

Mount Holyoke returns home to play WPI on Wednesday at 7pm.
