Basketball falls to Potsdam at Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- Daelynn Alcock scored 24 points with seven steals and seven rebounds to lead SUNY Potsdam to a 75-46 win over the Mount Holyoke basketball team on Saturday, in the final game of the Cardinal Classic at SUNY Plattsburgh.

Lucie Scarpine added 17 points with five 3-pointers and Olivia Cook scored nine points on 3-3 shooting for the Bears (1-3), who shot 10-27 (.370) from three and 27-66 (.409) from the field, while holding Mount Holyoke (0-4) to a .242 field goal percentage for the game and making 21 steals. Sara Richards also had seven steals for Potsdam.

Junior Hannah Goen (New London, N.H.) led the Lyons in scoring with 13 points to go with four steals, and senior Alex Twomey (Nutley, N.J.) added 11 points, six rebounds and five steals.

Junior Sofia Francisco (Boston, Mass.) had a game-high 15 rebounds to go with eight points, two blocked shots and two steals. Francisco leads the NEWMAC in rebounding (12.8) and blocks (3.8) per game.

A pair of layups by Goen gave the Lyons initial leads of 2-0 and 4-2. Then a pair of free throws by Alcock gave the Bears their first lead at 5-4, and they never trailed again.

Mount Holyoke closed within two points (15-13) on a jumper by junior Melina Pena (Miami, Fla.) with 6:49 to go in the second period. But a three by Scarpine made it 20-13 a minute later, and the Bears closed out the half on a 17-4 run for a 32-17 halftime lead.

Potsdam outscored Mount Holyoke by seven in both the third and fourth quarters to build its lead to a game-high on the final basket of the game by Scarpine.

First-year Ashtyn DiRienzo (Fremont, N.H.) had three points and three steals in 14 minutes off the Lyons' bench.

Mount Holyoke will host Fitchburg State in its home opener on Wednesday at 7pm.
