SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Springfield College ran out to a 14-0 lead and coasted from there to a 63-33 victory over the Mount Holyoke College basketball team in a NEWMAC game Wednesday night in Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.
The visiting Pride (14-8, 5-3 NEWMAC) shot .516 (16-31) from the field in the first half as they built a 35-15 lead at intermission. Their lead expanded by seven more points in the third quarter and three in the fourth quarter, as they held the host Lyons (4-18, 0-8 NEWMAC) to 14-60 (.233) shooting for the contest, including 2-18 (.111) from three-point territory.
Claire Finney scored a game-high 14 points for Springfield, while Amanda Leary added 13 points and six rebounds, including 10 points and four rebounds in Springfield's dominant first quarter. Natalie Lucas scored 11 more points for the Pride.
Senior Taryn White (Alexandria, Va.) led Mount Holyoke with 12 points, while sophomore Ania McMichael (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored nine points to go with four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Junior Sofia Francisco (Boston, Mass.) had 10 rebounds and four blocked shots for the Lyons, and senior Alex Twomey (Nutley, N.J.) had nine rebounds and four assists.
Springfield committed just seven turnovers to Mount Holyoke's 19, leading to a 18-0 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Lyons will play at Emerson Saturday at 1pm, while Springfield will look for its fourth straight win as it hosts Wellesley.
