Tsoni stars in two events to lead host Lyons at NEWMAC Championships

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Sophomore Ioanna Tsoni represented the host Mount Holyoke College track and field team with a second All-NEWMAC performance, taking second place in the finals of the 100 hurdles to highlight the Lyons' second day of the NEWMAC Track & Field Championships.

In much cooler and wetter weather than in Friday's preliminary heats, Tsoni (Athens, Greece) finished in 14.94 seconds to claim second place behind Katherine DeFosse of Springfield. The time was the second-best of Tsoni's career, behind her team record time of 14.89 seconds on Friday.

Tsoni also placed fourth out of 20 competitors in the triple jump, with a top mark of 11.46 meters (37'7.25").

Junior Elle Rimando (Mililani, Hawaii) had a career-best triple jump of 11.34 meters (37'2.5") to take fifth place, combining with Tsoni to score nine points in the event.

Eight Lyons combined to score 29 points on Saturday, for a final tally of 41, which placed Mount Holyoke ninth out of 10 teams. 

Seniors Elizabeth Gerbi (Orono, Maine) and Tessa Lancaster (Mansfield, Mass.) placed fifth (11:36.82) and sixth (11:41.90), respectively, in the 3,000 steeplechase, combining for seven team points.

Mount Holyoke took sixth place in the 4x400 relay with the third-best time in program history (4:09.17), just 0.02 seconds behind fifth-place MIT. First-year Sachi Robinson (Staten Island, N.Y.), senior Greta Trapp (La Crosse, Wis.), sophomore Dalia Luckhardt (Cerritos, Calif.) and senior Kim Beaver (Agawam, Mass.) scored three team points for their performance.

Sachi Robinson also placed seventh in the 400 hurdles in 1:09.20, scoring two points.

Other notable performances by the Lyons included:

  • Senior Greta Trapp (La Crosse, Wis.) took 10th place out of 26 competitors in the 1,500 meters in 5:04.91.
  • First-year Megan Gerbi (Orono, Maine) placed 10th in the 3,000 steeplechase (12:20.22).
  • Sophomore Anjali Phadnis (San Marcos, Calif.) placed 11th out of 26 in the 1,500 meters (5:12.12).
  • Senior Chloe Broadwell (Plano, Texas) led four Lyons in the discus throw with a personal-best mark of 28.72 meters (94'2"), good for 12th place out of 22 competitors.
  • First-year Bridget Hughes (North Easton, Mass.) led three Lyons in the 400 meters, placing 20th out of 26 (1:05.05).
  • Kim Beaver and Dalia Luckhardt were 12th (2:23.86) and 15th (2:25.31) out of 25 runners in the 800 meters.

Mount Holyoke travels to the Coast Guard Academy next weekend for the New England Division III Outdoor Championships.
