SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Mount Holyoke's attacking duo of seniors Elle Rimando and Madeline Barton combined for 39 kills in just three sets as the Lyons defeated visiting Westfield State 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-15) in a non-conference match between two winning teams Friday night.
Mount Holyoke (11-7) swept its third straight match while attacking at a sparkling .356 rate as a team. Rimando (Mililani, Hawaii) had 20 kills on 30 attempts (.467), as well as four service aces, and Barton (Brookfield, Wis.) had 19 kills on 40 attempts (.375), as they both raised their NEWMAC-leading averages in both points and kills.
Westfield State (10-9) had 22 kills to Mount Holyoke's 49, and attacked at a .100 rate for the match.
There were no lead changes or ties in the entire match, as the Lyons scored first and maintained their lead in each set.
Sophomore Olivia Murray (Miami, Fla.) added six kills on 13 attempts (.385) for the Lyons, and junior Kyra Staples (Chatham, Ill.) had a match-high 16 digs. Senior Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, Minn.) had a match-high 33 assists with seven digs and two kills.
Hanna Nihill had five kills and Mary Heneghan and Emma Nihill added four kills apiece for Westfield State, which ended a four-match winning streak.
Barton and Rimando continue to rank first and second, respectively, in the NEWMAC in both points per set and kills per set. Rimando has raised her average to 4.67 points per set, trailing Barton by only .02. MIT's Ella Zhou is third in the NEWMAC with 4.11 points per set. Barton's 4.16 kills per set leads the league, with Rimando second at 3.86 and Emerson's Shirley Yu third at 3.46.
Mount Holyoke has defeated Westfield State seven times in a row and raised its all-time record against the Owls to 17-10.
Mount Holyoke next plays at Wellesley on Tuesday at 7pm. Westfield State next hosts Anna Maria on Thursday at 7pm.
