SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Mount Holyoke seniors Madeline Barton and Sadie Duffrin set major team career records just a few points apart from one another in the Lyons' match against Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday, with Barton becoming the Lyons' all-time leader in kills in the first set and Duffrin setting the assists record in the second set.

The records highlighted the second home tri-match of the season for Mount Holyoke, which fell 3-1 (25-19, 16-25, 25-19, 25-15) to Maine Maritime, then 3-1 to Bates (23-25, 25-14, 27-25, 25-13) Saturday afternoon in Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.

All three teams carry winning records, with Mount Holyoke now 12-11, Maine Maritime at 17-8, and Bates at 12-8.

Needing three kills to tie the Lyons career kills record of 1,139 established by Emily Groth in 2006, Barton tied Groth with an assist from Duffrin to make it 19-16 Maine Maritime in the first set. She moved into first place all-time moments later to make it 21-18 with another Duffrin assist.

Duffrin needed nine assists to tie the team standard of 2,506 set by Rebecca Bailey in 2003. She did so in the second set by setting up sophomore Olivia Murray (Miami, Fla.) for a kill to increase the Lyons' lead to 20-11. Another setup to Murray in the third set made Duffrin MHC's all-time assists record holder.

After committing 11 attack errors in the second set, Maine Maritime pounded 12 kills with no errors in the third set for a .545 attack percentage, then went error-free again in the fourth set to defeat the Lyons. Sydney Williams led the Mariners with 14 kills, Ila Smith had 13 on 22 attempts (.545), and Ally Hadley added 10. Hannah Tate had a match-high 14 digs.

Murray and senior Elle Rimando (Mililani, Hawaii) had 11 kills apiece to lead Mount Holyoke, and Barton had 10 kills and 10 digs. Junior Kyra Staples (Chatham, Ill.) had 13 digs, and Duffrin had 24 assists with eight digs.

Bates defeated Maine Maritime 3-0 in the day's second match, but Mount Holyoke took the first set against the Bobcats 25-23 for a 1-0 lead. But Bates grew more effective with each set, attacking at successive rates of .061, .259, .273, and finally .357 to return home with a 2-0 day.

Anais Reneaum had 13 kills and two errors on 20 swings along with six block assists to lead Bates, while Maline Young had 12 kills on 30 attempts (.267).

Rimando had a match-high 20 kills for Mount Holyoke, and Barton added 13 kills. Staples and senior Amelia Ringor (Lafayette, Ind.) had 15 and 13 digs, respectively.

Mount Holyoke plays at Smith College Tuesday at 7pm.
