SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Jan. 21, 2012) – The Mount Holyoke College squash team split a pair of matches this morning at the 2012 Pioneer Valley Invitational. After rolling to a 6-3 victory over Hamilton College, the Lyons fell 9-0 to perennial power Yale University. They entered the weekend ranked 13th in the latest CSA National Rankings.
A total of 25 men's and women's squads from around the region are competing in the annual tournament, which kicked off yesterday and will conclude tomorrow. Over the course of the weekend, 49 matches will be played at Smith College and Amherst College in addition to Mount Holyoke.
The Lyons kicked off their weekend with an impressive 6-3 triumph over 18th-ranked Hamilton. Sophomore Randima Ranaweera (1), senior Shara Robertson (2), sophomore Shaheen Madraswala (3), first year Kristina Myren (5), junior Kathryn Brummer (6) and first year Dachelle Parker (9) each came out on top for the hosts, who picked up their eighth straight victory over the Continentals.
Hamilton's (3-3) points came from Alyssa Bawden (4), Isabelle Weisman (7) and Elizabeth Morris (8).
Mount Holyoke fell 9-0 to second-ranked Yale in its second outing of the day. The team's top performance came from Madraswala, who took the first game of her number three match against Rhetta Nadas before falling 3-1.
Yale has now won 26 consecutive matches and is off to a 9-0 start this season. The Bulldogs claimed their seventh national championship last year, defeating Trinity College 5-4 in the finals. From top to bottom, their lineup featured Millie Tomlinson, Kim Hay, Nadas, Lillian Fast, Shihui Mao, Issey Norman-Ross, Katie Harrison, Anne Harrison and Carolyn Brown today.
The Lyons (7-5) will wrap up their weekend against Haverford College tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
