BABSON PARK, Mass. (Oct. 20, 2010) – With junior Rebecca Stone and senior Monica Mercer leading the way, the fourth seeded Babson College women's tennis team cruised to a 5-1 victory over fifth seeded Mount Holyoke College this afternoon in the Quarterfinal Round of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament.
With their second win over Mount Holyoke this fall, the Beavers advanced to the Semifinal Round, where they will meet up with top seeded Wheaton College. The other Semifinal will feature second seeded Wellesley College and third seeded MIT. Both Semifinals, as well as the NEWMAC Championship, will take place at Smith College this weekend.
The Lyons, who advanced to the NEWMAC Tournament for the seventh season in a row, closed out the fall portion of their 2010-11 slate with an overall record of 3-7. They went 3-4 in league play.
Babson swept the three doubles matches to gain control in the early going. Stone and first year Sarah Whitaker picked up an 8-3 win at the number one slot, while Mercer and junior Ashley Lake prevailed 8-1 at the number two slot. Sophomore Mikaela Stamas and first year Inna Loseva came out on top 8-5 in their number three tilt to complete the sweep.
Stone and Mercer then closed things out with straight sets victories in their singles matches. They occupied the second and fourth spots, respectively.
Mount Holyoke's lone point came from senior Elise Marifian, who won the first set of her number three match 6-2 before her opponent retired prior to the second set.
The remaining contests all went unfinished.
