MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (Apr. 6, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College women's tennis team saw its two match winning streak come to an end with an 8-1 setback at Wesleyan University this afternoon. Prior to today's match, the Lyons had topped both American International College and RPI in convincing fashion.
Sophomore Genevieve Aniello, junior Sarah Miller, first year Grace Smith and first year Kiley Robbins each prevailed at both singles and doubles to set the tone for the Cardinals.
Wesleyan grabbed the early lead with a pair of doubles victories. Aniello and Smith paired up for an 8-1 win at the number spot, while Robbins and Miller came out on top 8-5 in their number two tilt.
The Cardinals proceeded to capture all six singles contests in straight sets. From top to bottom, their lineup featured Aniello, Miller, Smith, Robbins, senior Linda McDougal and first year Nicki Softness.
The most competitive match was between McDougal and Richardson at fifth position. Richardson nearly sent the match to three sets but fell 11-9 in a second set tiebreaker.
Mount Holyoke (5-9, 3-4 NEWMAC) is slated to compete in the Seven Sisters Championship this weekend at Wellesley College. After facing off against Bryn Mawr College (12:00 p.m.) and Wellesley (3:00 p.m.) on Saturday, the Lyons will meet up with Smith College (9:00 a.m.) and Vassar College (12:00 p.m.) on Sunday.
