SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Apr. 16, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College women's tennis team closed out its 2010-11 campaign with a pair of convincing wins in front of its home crowd today. After blanking Union College 9-0, the Lyons raced to an 8-1 triumph over Roger Williams University. They have never fallen to either team.
Mount Holyoke piled up six wins during the spring and finished with an overall record of 9-11. The Lyons went 3-4 in league play before the break and qualified for the NEWMAC Tournament for the seventh season in a row.
Prior to today's matches, seniors Natalie Hsiang and Elise Marifian were honored for the contributions to the program over the past four years.
The Lyons swept the three doubles matches to gain an early advantage in their win over Union. Hsiang and sophomore Nahrhee Han combined for an 8-1 triumph at the number one spot, while Marifian and first year Maya Sayarath won by the same score in their number two tilt. Junior Sarah Moore and first year AnnElizabeth Konkel came out on top 8-0 in their number three contest.
The hosts proceeded to win all six of the singles matches in straight sets. From top to bottom, their lineup featured Marifian, Sayarath, Hsiang, first year Eman Malik, junior Heather Richardson and first year Kelsey Brower.
Mount Holyoke then defeated Roger Williams to cap things off. Hsiang and Han once again won by a score of 8-1, while Moore and Konkel picked up an 8-3 win. Marifian, Han, Sayarath, Hsiang, Malik and Richardson each won in straight sets in their respective singles matches.
Roger Williams' lone point came from juniors Amanda Wolfe and Libby Magner, who held on for an 8-6 victory over Marifian and Sayarath at number two doubles.
