WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke first and second varsity eights placed eighth and 18th, respectively, among 22 boats racing in the Wormtown Chase regatta on Saturday, Oct. 25.
"Both varsity 8s had their best row of the week on race day, when it mattered most," said head coach Cara Murphy. "It was a good way to cap our fall season and provide us some momentum into our winter training."
With the first seven places occupied by boats from Wesleyan, Holy Cross and Wellesley, Mount Holyoke's 1V8 finished eighth in a time of 18:34.3, outpacing ninth-place Coast Guard (18:39.4) and 11th-place WPI (18:49.1) among others.
The Lyons' 2V8 finished in 20:01.6, trailing Coast Guard's 17th-place 2V8 by 2.8 seconds and beating Connecticut College's 2V8 by 17.8 seconds.
Mount Holyoke's novice eight placed fifth among five boats in 24:19.8. Sophomore Sam Thibeault (Northfield, N.H.) finished second to Mass. Maritime's Nathan Gravelin in the Men's College 1x race.
"The wind picked up after the varsity boats, so the novices and Sam had a pretty stiff headwind to contend with in their first races," said Murphy.
