NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Mount Holyoke College rowing team went head-to-head in three races against No. 11 nationally ranked U.S. Coast Guard Academy Saturday morning on the Thames River, with the Lyons taking a win in novice fours.
Racing over a 1,900-meter course with a strong tail current, Mount Holyoke's 1V8 crossed the finish line in 7:14.1, trailing the host Bears' 1V8 (6:59.9) by 14.2 seconds.
Coast Guard fielded two boats in the 2V8 race, the first finishing in 7:21.9 and the second in 7:23.0, with Mount Holyoke timing in at 7:53.1.
With sophomore Sam Thibeault (Northfield, N.H.) at coxswain, an otherwise all-rookie four comprising Elaine Pytel (Chicago, Ill.), Ruby Rippetoe-Crawford (Portland, Ore.), Zarina Karim (Almaty, Kazakhstan), and Paquita Karega (Kigali, Rwanda) outpaced Coast Guard 9:53.6 to 9:24.3.
The Lyons next race at the NEWMAC Championships on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., next Saturday starting at 8:30am.
