Swimming and diving completes excellent weekend at Wellesley invite

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke swimming and diving team completed an excellent Sisters Invitational Sunday at Wellesley College, placing third out of five teams behind a slew of personal-best performances.

The Lyons placed third out of five teams with 724.5 points. Wellesley won the meet with 1,245.5 points, followed by Smith (1,035.5), Mount Holyoke, Westfield State (460) and Simmons (267.5).

"We had an amazing meet," said head coach Dave Allen. "Forty-four personal bests! Just about everyone had at least a season-best. The team's energy was amazing. It was great to see the energy they brought to the pool deck supporting and cheering each other on."

First-year Katie Thomason (Alexandria, Va.) had a personal record in all seven events they swam, while junior Madeline Hood (The Colony, Texas) and first-year Carol Fang (Shanghai, China) set five PRs apiece and senior Kellyn Norman (Franklinton, N.C.) set four.

Among Mount Holyoke's top-eight marks were:

  • Junior Isabel Dunn (Harbor Springs, Mich.) placed third in the 400-yard individual medley (4:57.60), fourth in the in the 50-yard butterfly (27.61), fourthin the 200-yard fly (2:25.60), eighth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:22.08)
  • First-year Ellie Lewis (Spencer, Ind.) placed fourth in the 50-yard breaststroke (34.08), fifth in the 100-yard breast (1:13.46), fifth in the 200-yard breast (2:38.69), and seventh in the 200-yard individual medley (2:21.99)
  • First-year Maya Oakes (Pine Bush, N.Y.) took seventh place in the 200-yard backstroke (2:16.82) and eighth place in the 500-yard freestyle (5:42.62)
  • Sophomore Katherine Upton (Cambridge, Mass.) set new personal records in both 1-meter and 3-meter diving. Upton placed third in 3-meter diving with 355.045 points, and she was fourth at 1 meter with 367.70 points.
  • Thomason placed fourth in the 400-yard individual medley (5:01.54), eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:43.82), and eighth in the 50 butterfly (29.89)
  • Hood placed sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:41.12) and eighth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.25)
  • Fang took seventh place in the 400-yard individual medley (5:52.74).
  • First-year Naomi Long (Omaha, Neb.) placed fifth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:44.50) and seventh in the 50 butterfly (29.71)
  • First-year Evelyn Rousseau (Hudsonville, Mich.) took seventh place in the 1,650-yard freestyle (20:23.26).
  • Junior Zoey Zhu (Sturbridge, Mass.) placed eighth in the 50-yard backstroke (31.38)
  • Allen, Dunn, Rousseau, and Hood took third place in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:53.17.

The Lyons next travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., for the Vassar Sprint Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 31.
