NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Mount Holyoke College cross country team opened its 2014 campaign on Saturday at the Smith Invitational and it was a successful debut for the Lyons. MHC finished fourth of 16 teams at the meet, led by sophomore Becca Rogers, who finished sixth overall.
Rogers (Tucson, Ariz./St. Gregory College Prepatory School) finished the 5k course with a time of 19:58.60 - good for sixth overall and first among the Lyons. Senior Dana Fry (Tempe, Ariz./Miss Porter's School) was 20th with a time of 20:57.00, while junior captain Elizabeth DeLeon (Boise, Idaho/Timberline) rounded out the top-25 with a 23rd place finish time of 21:09.40.
Sophomore Hannah Rickard (Traverse, Mich. / Traverse City) was 42nd overall with a time of 21:56.00, while first year Sunny Shan (Cupertino, Calif./Monte Vista) was just behind in 43rd with a mark of 21:56.50.
First year Tabitha Crowell (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Canterbury School) ran to 93rd overall with a time of 23:32.50 and sophomore Emma Tolerton (Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) was 94th with a mark of 23:36.80.
Also finishing well was sophomore Brianna Weir (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy), who posted a time of 24:09.40 to place 108th overall. First year Emma Thakey (Pocatello, Ind. / Century) was 115th (24:25.40), while classmates Mia Barnes (Thornville, Ohio / Monteverde Friends School) finished 139th with a time of 25:31.00.
Rounding out the efforts in the season opener was first years Caroline Black (Syracuse, N.Y. / Westhill Bishop Ludden) and Maria Lewis (Boston, Mass./Fenway), who were 168th (27:45.30) and 196th (40:24.40), respectively.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, September 27, when they travel to Williamstown, Mass., to compete in the Purple Valley Classic at 1pm.
