BOSTON, Mass. – The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) has announced its weekly award winners and Mount Holyoke College student-athlete Becca Rogers has been selected. The sophomore garnered Runner of the Week honors in cross country after pacing the Lyons for the third straight meet.
A native of Tucson, Ariz., Rogers finished fourth overall and first among NEWMAC runners at the Keene State Invitational last week. She posted a time of 19:08 in the 5k event, which featured 156 total runners. As a team, Mount Holyoke was fifth among 14 competing teams.
This is the first weekly conference honor for Rogers, who was named the Lyon of the Week last week after finishing first on the team and 38th overall at the highly competitive 6k Purple Valley Classic, hosted by Williams College last weekend. She boasted a time of 23:53.0 in a field that featured 267 runners. As a team, Mount Holyoke was 12th of 24 competing teams.
Rogers was the top finisher for the Lyons in their first meet of the season as well, placing sixth overall at the Smith College Invitational. At that event, she recorded a time of 19:58.60, helping MHC place fourth of 16 teams.
During her rookie season, the former St. Gregory College Prepatory School standout helped the Lyons to five top-15 finishes. Among her top performances last year was at the Franklin Pierce Invitational, where she was 56th overall with a time of 25:26.
Prior to Mount Holyoke, Rogers was a four-year member of her high school cross country team. In addition to serving as a captain, she competed at the Southern Arizona States 5k Championship for three years straight. She was also a four-year member of the soccer team and a two-year participant and one year captain of the track and field team.
Mount Holyoke returns to action this weekend when it travels to Franklin Park, Mass., to compete in the Open New England Championships. The women's sub-varsity race kicks off at 11am, followed by the women's varsity race at 11:45am.
