Lacrosse thumps Elms 20-2 in season opener

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team posted a dominating 20-2 victory over Elms College on Wednesday night, handing first-year head coach Elizabeth Morrison her first victory with the Lyons.

Senior Emi Bisson (Chester, Conn.) scored five goals with five assists and sophomore Juliana Spaulding (Wakefield, Mass.) had four goals, one assist, nine ground balls and eight caused turnovers to lead the Lyons (1-0). All four first-year players on the team recorded their first collegiate goals in the game, and junior Teya Broad-Wright (McIntosh, Fla.) also tallied her first career goal.

Senior Elle Mader (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored three goals and first-year Molly McSharry (West Orange, N.J.) tallied two goals and an assist.

Senior Marielle Welch (Silver Spring, Md.) got the Lyons on the scoreboard 90 seconds into the game. Bisson followed 41 seconds later with her first tally of the season, and she scored again with 10:28 to go in the first period on an assist from Spaulding for a 3-0 lead.

Elms' Katherine Ingram put the visiting Blazers on the board with 8:56 to go, converting a feed from Jackie Cronin, to cut the gap to 3-1. But MHC responded with three unanswered goals to finish the period with a 6-1 lead. The Lyons made it 10-1 with 7:09 left in the second quarter, then initiated the running clock nearly 14 minutes later, with 8:03 to go in the third quarter, as Mader opened up second-half scoring on an assist from McSharry.

Chloe Sullivan scored for Elms to make it 14-2 with 11:10 to go in the game, but Mount Holyoke ended the game with six unanswered tallies, including the first collegiate goals recorded by first-year Rory Bernardo (Oaklyn, N.J.), Broad-Wright, first-year Zoey Candito (Belchertown, Mass.), and Grace Bird (Deerfield, Mass.).

Mount Holyoke enjoyed a 48-7 advantage in shots, 36-17 in ground balls, and 17-6 in draw controls. Bird and Spaulding had seven draw controls apiece.

Marisa LaRocque made 20 saves for Elms (0-1). Cronin had five ground balls, five draw controls and two caused turnovers for the Blazers.

Sophomore Valeria Bolanos (Newington, Conn.) made one save for Mount Holyoke.

The Lyons will host UMaine-Farmington on Sunday at 11am. Elms will host Emmanuel Saturday, March 7 at 1pm.
