SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Senior Emi Bisson had five goals and three assists, including her 200th career point, and sophomore Juliana Spaulding also scored five times as the Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team defeated UMaine-Farmington 19-9 on Sunday at the MHC Turf.
Bisson (Chester, Conn.) became the seventh player in team history to reach the 200-point plateau when her assist to Spaulding (Wakefield, Mass.) led off the game's scoring 71 seconds into the first quarter. She finished the game ranked sixth all-time in team history with 207 points on 134 goals and 73 assists in 49 games thus far.
First-year Grace Bird (Deerfield, Mass.), Spaulding and Bisson scored in succession after the opening goal for a 4-0 Lyons lead 6:17 into the game.
UMF (0-2) responded with three straight goals from Miah Coffin, Bree Griffen, and Kylie Delile to close the score to 4-3, before Bisson and Bird scored on back-to-back free-position shots to make it 6-3 going into the second quarter.
The visiting Beavers hung in the game for the second quarter, as the teams scored four goals apiece for an 11-8 Mount Holyoke lead at the half.
UMF closed within two of MHC for the fifth and final time when Emma Dunn netted her second goal for the Beavers to make it 10-8 43 seconds into the third quarter.
Mount Holyoke sophomore Helena Robinson (Gales Ferry, Conn.), making her playing debut for the Lyons, scored her first collegiate goal after the ensuing draw for an 11-8 MHC lead with 13:46 to go in the third. The Lyons pulled away from there with a decisive 8-0 run to finish the third quarter. Robinson tallied two assists for three points and senior Elle Mader (Cincinnati, Ohio) collected two goals and an assists in the run.
After a 12-minute scoreless stretch, Bird added her third goal of the game for a 19-8 lead. Autumn Freeman scored the game's final goal for the Beavers with 3:21 remaining.
Mount Holyoke had a 35-28 advantage in shots, and slight edges in draw controls (17-13), ground balls (22-17), and turnovers (19-20).
Skye Cortonoir made 11 saves for UMF, while sophomore Valeria Bolanos (Newington, Conn.) had 12 saves for Mount Holyoke.
Mader finished with three goals, an assist and three caused turnovers for MHC. Sophomore Josie McFadden (Edmonton, Alberta) had two caused turnovers and a game-high five ground balls.
The Lyons, who are 2-0 for the first time since 2020, will host Suffolk University Wednesday at 6pm. UMF next plays at Dean College on March 12 at 3:30pm.
